Abstract
This paper compares three qualitative methodologies ethnography, action research, and clinical research in terms of the roles of researcher in the field. Although these qualitative methodologies share common characteristics in that they emphasize holistic approach and rely on ‘fieldwork’ for gathering data, they differ on several aspects. Using the three fieldwork roles as an analytical framework, I analyze my own fieldwork experience at an R&D center of a multinational company operating in Japan.
