Abstract
This study highlights CJ CGV's global strategy and aims at an in-depth analysis of the special screening platform (e.g., 4DX, ScreenX) business. Based on international management theory, CJ CGV's global competition strategy is analyzed, especially focusing on CJ CGV as a “platform business” company that connects film producers and distributors and dealing with strategic decision-making issues and detailed strategies as part of the effort to expand the market. This paper provides practical applications while looking at platform business and global competition strategies from an integrated perspective. CJ CGV, Korea's No. 1 theater operator and the world's fifth-largest multiplex entity, has continued to grow based on its strong performance in the global market, despite the situation in the domestic film market, which long ago reached a state of maturity. CJ CGV's entry into the global market is divided into its endeavors in the theater business and the special screening platform business. Since its entry into the Chinese market in 2006, CJ CGV has been leading the theater business, and its special screening platform has been led by its subsidiary CJ 4Dplex since 2011. CJ 4DPLEX has secured global contracts through partnerships with major global theater operators using integration strategies based on blockbuster films with low cultural barriers and high needs for Nth viewing, along with localization strategies considering the technological differences between 4DX and ScreenX and national needs at the same time. Although CJ CGV is considered to be a “pioneer” in the special screening platform market, it is striving to maintain market dominance by developing innovative screening platforms linking ScreenX through continuous technology updates and expanding its partnerships with theater operators. Attention is focused on whether CJ CGV will continue to take the lead in the everincreasing competition in the global film industry.
