Abstract

This paper tries to find the answer that why the first AI debater lost the debate against the human champion debater in Feb. 2019 in the aspect of Ethos and Pathos. Ethos, Pathos, Logos are the three elements for the speakers to persuade listeners. Ethos is about who is the speaker. Pathos is about who are the listeners. Logos is about what is the contents. This paper excludes logos and uses ethos and pathos for analyzing the weakness of IBM Project Debater to suggest improvements. Qualitative case study is used because the debate in Feb. 2019 is the only case. In ethos, IBM Project debater couldn’t show her expertise as an prepared debate expert in her rebuttals, while the human champion debater showed his expertise as an impromptu debate expert from the beginning to the end. In pathos, listeners still have doubt from the speeches from the IBM Project Debater, while they feel angry from the unfair situations imagined by the human champion debater. If AI debater improves her ethos and pathos, companies feel more easily to use AI debater.
