Bear Better: A Social Enterprise Utilizing Business Model Innovation and Partnership

Abstract
Founded in 2012, Bear Better is a Korean social enterprise established to hire people with developmental disabilities. Despite several adverse conditions as a social enterprise employing people with disabilities, only four years later of its foundation Bear Better became recognized as a truly successful social enterprise by securing sustainable entrepreneurship with employing 180 people in the developmentally disabled, achieving revenue growth 40 times, and forming business partnerships with more than 200 companies. The purpose of this case study is to analyze the success factors that lead Bear Better to overcome the difficulties and limitations that companies have by hiring people with developmental disabilities, and achieve social value creation and sustainability at the same time. Further, we intended to introduce innovative business models forming the basis for its success. This case examines (1) the difficulties experienced by Bear Better during its start-up and in the early stage of business as a social enterprise, (2) the excavation of the business model of ‘business partnerships with commercial enterprises’ based on disabled linking employment system, and (3) the process of forming the basis for sustainable growth. Furthermore, by identifying the success factors of Bear Better different from existing social enterprises, this study provides the implications for social enterprises facing sustainability issues to achieve the social value and economic value at the same time.
