A Case Study on the Market Outlook Based on Scenario Planning: Focusing on the Domestic Pork Market

Abstract

Company A has been successful in the domestic pork industry for the past 40 years. However, in recent years Company A faced great challenges due to market liberalization and the slowdown of market growth. This study analyzes the scenario planning project which Company A carried out in order to overcome the crisis and search new opportunities for growth. Company A listed seven key uncertainties regarding the domestic pork industry which were categorized into customer issues, market/competition issues, and politics/policy issues. It wrote 4 scenarios based on two key factors- consumer preferences and forms of vertical integration. Implications from the scenario planning were as follows. First, domestic pork producers should find ways to differentiate their products from that of imported pork. They must also promote the high quality of domestically produced pork to consumers through a variety of marketing channels and tools. Second, discussions about the form of integration is needed to improve both quality and productivity.
