Abstract

The global medical device market has grown steadily over the past 20 years due to the impact of aging population and increasing social awareness for healthy life. Nevertheless, the local medical device industry in Korea has a lower competitiveness than those of advanced countries due to short history and small firm structure. This paper confirmed the process of gaining competitiveness with case studies of medical device company that already have succeeded in localization. In advance, we analyzed success factors of four major global companies that have biggest market share in blood glucose monitoring system market. And based on those, the case of I-Sense, which succeeded in localization with excellent quality and competitive price strategy in the local blood glucose monitoring system industry market was analyzed. Key success factors for I-Sense’s successful localization were as follows. First, excellent product performance and second, large number of patents and third, stable production capacity and fourth, exclusive strip supply capability and fifth, a variety of product lines. However, most of local medical device companies still have only price competitiveness due to small firm structures. The competitive advantage strategy including five success factors as above would need to be fully applied to Korean medical device market as well as only blood glucose monitoring system market
