Abstract

Founded in 2010, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, which is the Chinese word for millet, occupied the first place in Chinese smartphone market in 2014 overtaking global giant Samsung Electronics and Apple. In the global smartphone market in 2014. Xiaomi is the fourth largest smartphone maker following only Samsung, Apple, and Huawei. Beyond Chinese market Xiaomi is expanding to international market including Singapore and India and aims to establish itself as a global smartphone brand by selling more than 100 million phones in 2015. The purpose of this case study is to provide materials and data for students to analyze Xiaomi’s rapid growth and Chinese and global smartphone industry environment. In particular, students may discuss how Xiaomi became the biggest smartphone manufacturer in China in less than 5 years with a variety of perspectives and theories. Students may also discuss upcoming challenges that Xiaomi should face and overcome in order to continue rapid growth.
