Abstract
In recent years, Korean banking industry has faces considerable crisis originated from economic recession and low interest rate lasting for several years. It, therefore, has tried to discover a next-generation growth power in various fields. Thanks to the “Korean wave”, highly evaluated for several years across the world, the cultural contents industry of Korea is aggressively brought to the attention of banking industry. IBK(Industrial Bank of Korea) firstly launched an exclusive department for financing the cultural contents industry in 2012. It is now leading and maturing the cultural contents financing in Korea with a series of successful cases in movies, TV dramas, animations, video games and so on. This case study addresses the IBK’s challenge and success in the cultural contents financing which traditional banking industry has ignored due to its embedded characteristics of high risk and high uncertainty. The purpose of this case study is to derive valuable implications for other banks which are considering to enter the cultural contents financing industry by analyzing the success factors of IBK. This case would provide a clue about the role of the cultural contents financing for up-grading the cultural contents industry of Korea. Finally, This case would contribute to the academic society by adding an example which a firm overcomes the crisis in an existing business area from by discovering a new growth engine in an other industry, entirely unrelated.
