Continuous Growth through Acquisition: A Case Study on LG H&H’s Entry into Soft Drink Business

Abstract
LG Household & Health Care(LG H&H), a leading maker of household products and cosmetics, has sought to develop its competitive advantage in each of several segments of the market. A main element of its growth strategy has been to expand the development of sustainable products through acquisition and then take advantage of the target's infrastructure and skills, including marketing networks, production, and logistics. Given LG H&H’s rapid growth rate, its market value, its strong position in each business, and its successful acquisition processes, this case provides an appropriate story for discussing the motivation of acquisition, its overall framework, and its way of doing acquisition. Especially, this article unveils the LG H&H approach to capturing the potential value from an acquisition, especially focusing on the event of acquiring Korean Coca Cola Bottling. The case provides good information for motivation, pros and cons, processes for acquisition, as well as retention issues following the completion of an acquisition.
