Abstract

This study attempts to explore the nature of the strategic scope decision based on the in-depth field study of a weather service provider - Kweather. With the rise of the private weather service providers, the eco-system of the weather information industry is rapidly changing. Faced with the unresolved policy issues including the system of division with the public services (led by the Korean Meteorological Administration) the private weather service providers are pursuing a variety of business strategies. Their strategic challenges and responses make up classical cases of the strategic positioning which is rarely studied in Korea. Such advanced issues as synergy creation among the multiple lines of business and the system of division between the business and the government should pose realistic discussion points for the students as well as the scholars. This study is expected to introduce the weather business to the academic audience.
