Abstract

The purpose of this article is to review law and management dual degree programs in the US, Singapore, and Hong Kong, and to examine the possibility of its implementation in Korea. Since a firm has faced growing competition and the conflicts of interests among stakeholders, the demand for legal services for legitimate decision making by managers has increased dramatically over the past decade. In addition, the number of lawyers in Korea has increased, which makes lawyers’ interests turn into legal services to firms, such as in-house legal service, M&A, and intellectual properties from traditional lawsuits. Thus, from the perspectives of business education, it gets important for potential managers to learn laws, while, from the viewpoints of law education, it becomes useful for potential lawyers to get business training. Several graduate schools of business, which confer MBA degree to the graduates, opened in 2006, and graduate schools of law, which confer JD, will begin in 2009. Therefore, this article reviews the global cases of JD/MBA dual degree programs and examines the possibility of its implementation in Korea.
